Local 21 Strike Bulletin: Day Three

December 7, 2017

You can see videos and pictures from the strike on our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/IFPTELocal21.  Use #OaklandStrike to show your support!

THERE IS A STRIKE DAY FOUR – STAY STRONG!

Local 21 members are continuing to hold strong on the picket line; one of our members, Mike Munson, brought a barbeque and a smoker to the picket line, feeding the striking city workers out of his pickup truck. This is the true face and spirit of Oakland.

Ali Schwarz, another Local 21 member, is missing her daughter’s fourth birthday to be on the picket line. “It breaks my heart that I’m not there for my family right now,” she said. “But I’m here with my union family, and I know what we’re doing right now is important. Ali has written an op ed on the strike, which may be published by news outlets tomorrow.

CITY COUNCIL HAS NEW OFFER AFTER SECOND CLOSED SESSION
The City Council met again today (Thursday) at 1 p.m. to discuss the strike. Local 21 and SEIU 1021 members flanked both sides of City Hall to make sure no Council members used the back door. We actually caught a Councilman trying to do so, and forced him to turn around and use the front entrance for the meeting. You can watch the video here.

After the closed session, City Council had a new offer for SEIU. We’re expecting to get the same offer from City Council. The new proposal is:

  • 4% in year one , retro to July 1, 2017
  • 1% guaranteed in year two, and an additional 1% based on the original revenue driven formula in the last day of the last month in the year.

The movement is too small. We are on Strike Day Three, verging on Day Four. We are determined to stay strong and demand the respect we deserve.

MAYOR SCHAAF CONTINUES USING DIRTY SCARE TACTICS
On the first day of the strike, Mayor Libby Schaaf went to a $1,600 a plate fundraiser instead of coming to the table, which clearly show what her priorities are. We are about serving the residents of Oakland. Libby Schaaf is about Libby Schaaf.

On the second day of the strike, she smeared city employees as greedy and irresponsible while lying about how much money was available in the Oakland Budget. By the third day of the strike, she has done all of the above, AND is using scare tactics. She told the media that in order to give Oakland workers what they deserve, she’d have to “eliminate 188 people.” Here’s the thing: there are more budgeted vacant positions than that in Oakland, so her nasty threat is an empty one. The City of Oakland would just continue to not fill the current vacancies. They couldn’t if they wanted to anyway, because qualified candidates wouldn’t want to be hired at a place that pays 10% less than other jurisdictions.

Her union-busting tactics are straight out of the republican playing book. And they won’t work on us.
Sign the petition telling Libby Schaaf to do the right thing and be the leader that Oakland needs.
We’re staying out for Day FOUR of the strike. One day longer, one day stronger!

CALIFORNIA LABOR COUNCIL WARNS LIBBY SCHAAF THAT HER ACTIONS WILL HAVE CONSEQUENCES
Yesterday, the Alameda Labor Council sent a scathing letter to Mayor Libby Schaaf telling her that she has lost any future endorsements from them.

Today, the California Labor council sent also sent Mayor Libby Schaaf a letter. We’ll let you revel in the content for yourself:

“At a time when anti-union forces are seeking to weaken the labor movement at every turn, I can assure you that we will not tolerate this kind of anti-worker bias in our own backyard. Your continued refusal to treat the City of Oakland’s workers with respect is completely unacceptable. We support elected officials who stand up for working people. We devote tremendous energy and resources to defeating those who don’t.”

THE STRIKE IS CONTINUING TOMORROW. NOTE THE REVISED START TIMES.
We know that everyone is tired, but we must stay strong. We cannot let up on the picket line. The Mayor is digging her heels in, and we need to stay strong on Day FOUR of the strike. DO NOT GO TO WORK TOMORROW.
