"In our age there is no such thing as 'keeping out of politics'. All issues are political issues" - George Orwell

IFPTE Local 21 is a union representing highly trained, motivated, and dedicated public professionals who carry out the mission of their governmental agencies in the highest of manners. As is our reputation for our educated and effective bargaining and personnel related functions, Local 21 is a major political entity in nearly every one of the jurisdictions where our members are employed. From supporting Mayors and City Council members to encouraging our own members to run for Commissions and Retirement Boards, Local 21 sets a very high bar for political excellence.

To become a union which truly stands out in all facets of representation, a strong political action program is key. Our political program is one comprised of a multifaceted approach of campaigning, endorsements, lobbying, and fundraising. Through these activities and on the shoulders of our politically active members, much of our power is born.

We testify before Boards and Commissions, meet with Mayors and other elected officials, walk precincts, staff phone banks and write letters, all towards the common goal of strengthening our union, our professions and the governmental organizations that employ us.

The Local 21 Committee On Political Education (COPE) and our Political Action Committee (PAC) are all geared towards empowering ourselves at the bargaining table, and in other key forums as well to becoming more persuasive in the critical policy-related decisions that our elected representatives, and our employers, are making every day of every month.

Though it may not come natural to all Local 21 members, political involvement for public employees is critical to having informed debate within the political context of nearly every decision being made in the halls of power.

Our engineers design the bridges, our IT professionals maintain critical communication capabilities, our accountants balance the budgets and our environmental specialists monitor the environment for contaminants. All of these people know better than most what works best for our cities, counties and special districts. It is this knowledge that makes us so valuable and, along with political activism, builds our leverage to contribute timely and informed arguments in political debates.
