August 6, 2010, Stand up for Working Families, a coalition of city Unions including Local 21, released a press statement regarding an official memo from the Citys Health Services System citing that the Adachi measure will hurt working families. As part of the Ballot Simplification process, the San Francisco Department of Elections released a statement citing a memo received from Catherine Dodd, the Director of the Citys Health Service System. The memo, authored by Ms. Dodd, raises serious concerns about Jeff Adachis measure that has taken aim at working families in San Francisco.
Stand Up for Working Families Press Release 8.6.10
August 2, 1010, Stand up for Working Families, a coalition of city Unions including Local 21, filed a complaint with Jose Cisneros, the Citys Treasurer and Tax Collector, and requested that the City investigate Public Defender Jeff Adachis systematic failure to pay business taxes. Recent information has shown that while Adachi wants to double the cost of family health care benefits, he has repeatedly dodged his own tax obligations.
July 22, 2010 Stand up for Working Families, a coalition of city Unions including Local 21, held a press conference after delivering a letter to City Attorney Dennis Herrera asking for an investigation as to whether the Citys Grand Jury process was misused and utilized as a political vehicle for Jeff Adachi and Craig Weber.A letter, sent by Mr. Herrera to San Francisco Superior Court addressing his concerns, was distributed as well as a letter from Stand Up for Working Families to Mr. Herrera requesting an investigation into the appropriateness of Mr. Webers behavior. Mr. Weber served simultaneously as a committee chairperson of the Civil Grand Jury examining the Citys pension system and as Treasurer of a political committee to support a ballot initiative dealing with the same issue.
Adachi Wants Your Money
City and County of San Francisco members - Public Defender Jeff Adachi has jumped on the Republican bandwagon along with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and is pushing a Charter amendment that will make City workers pay more for their pensions and way more for their health care, pricing many working families out of dependent health care. Nevermind that you just agreed to a 4.6% pay cut a few months ago, or that you helped pass pension reform measures twice in the last two years, or that you have given back to the City 7 out of the last 9 years...

Newsom: I'm Already Reforming Pensions, My Way; August 26, 2010; Bay Citizen
In June, the San Francisco civil grand jury released a report about the city's mounting pension obligations. Entitled "Pension Tsunami," it warned that San Francisco's pension obligations could grow to $1 billion by 2014. The city's annual budget is about $6.5 billion. The city already must pay 13.5 percent of each employee's salary into the pension fund to cover the pension fund's yearly shortfall, and that figure may climb to as much as 30 percent of payroll in four years. If left unchecked, the grand jury report warned, pension and benefit costs could bankrupt San Francisco in the years ahead.

"Shame on you!" was the cry reverberating in Pacific Heights last night as the black Mercedes and BMWs pulled up to the valet parking at Wall Street financier Michael Moritz's house. Their well-coiffed occupants scurried inside to write big checks for Prop B, Jeff Adachi's Charter Amendment that will double the cost of health care for San Francisco workers and their families. Some 300 of those workers, with kids in tow, gathered outside the stately mansion, waving oversized $1,000,000 bills and chanting while the Brass Liberation Orchestra provided a spirited musical backdrop.

SF Pension Reform by Any OtherName; August 11, 2010; KCBS
A fierce fight over what to call San Francisco's controversial pension reform proposition has ended with the words "pension reform" erased from the ballot description. The Ballot Simplification Committee at the San Francisco Department of Elections has decided that Public Defender Jeff Adachi's pension reform measure will be called "Proposition B: City Retirement and Health Plans."

Hidden health care costs of Adachi's pension reform measure; August 4, 2010; San Francisco Bay Guardian
New information about the health care costs associated with a pension reform measure backed by Public Defender Jeff Adachi suggests that the highest cost burden would fall to parents at the lowest end of the pay scale.
An analysis of the Adachi measure estimates that city employees with two or more dependents could face monthly healthcare cost increases of $220 a month, which would bring their total monthly contributions to $448, $765, or $1,630, depending on the health care plan. Dental care would bring those costs up an additional $82 per month.

Adachi/Moritz Initiative Is a Fraud; August 2 2010; Beyond Chron
Since my July 7 story on the so-called pension reform initiative on San Franciscos November ballot, more disturbing facts have emerged. First, the Bay Citizen revealed on July 16 that the measure was almost entirely funded by a billionaire venture capitalist (Michael Moritz) and an ally of Governor Schwarzenegger (Stephen Crane), with Public Defender Jeff Adachi its public face. Second, while the initiative is being sold as pension reform, as much as 80% of its cost savings comes from steep increases in health care costs for city employees with dependents.

Political piata: Public employee unions and their friends at City Hall are coming down hard and heavy on Public Defender Jeff Adachi for his public pension reform measure. In a complaint filed Thursday, Robert Muscat, head of the city's Professional and Technical Engineers union, called on Tax Collector Jos Cisneros to investigate Adachi for allegedly failing to pay city taxes from a private publishing company that has made him at least $130,000 in the past three years.

Will Jeff Adachi save San Francisco? CA wants Gray Davis back; July 30, 2010; The Hill
Gertrude Stein famously said of the Oakland region, there is no there there. The question the Bay Area must ask today is this: Is there any there there yet? Recently, Jeff Adachi has been attempting to solve problems the old fashioned way, through self government. San Francisco is at a crossroads, writes Adachi. Theres a fiscal train wreck just around the corner. In fact, its already here. With our citys failing infrastructure and roads, a $787 million deficit next year, $1.2 billion in city employee pension costs that are projected to double in five years, the term go for broke takes on a new meaning. Will San Francisco become the next Vallejo?
