The next Delegate Assembly will be Saturday, September 29, at the Downtown Oakland Marriott. This Assembly will focus on the upcoming election season and address how we can increase our activist base for this November election. The Assembly will explore the political challenges ahead of us.
We are fortunate to have a very special Guest Speaker, John Nichols, political writer and Washington correspondent for The Nationmagazine. He is also a contributing writer for The Progressive and In These Times, and Associate Editor of the Capital Times, the daily newspaper in Madison, Wisconsin. His articles have appeared in the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, and dozens of other newspapers. Nichols is a frequent guest on radio and television programs as a commentator on politics and media issues. He was featured in Robert Greenwald’s documentary, “Outfoxed,” and in the documentaries such as Joan Sekler’s “Unprecedented,” Matt Kohn’s “Call It Democracy” and Robert Pappas’s “Orwell Rolls in his Grave.” Nichols is also the author of the acclaimed book, “Uprising: How Wisconsin Renewed the Politics of Protest from Madison to Wall Street.” Nichols incorporates on-the-scene reporting to show the development of last spring’s mass protests in Wisconsin, after Governor Scott Walker attempted to revoke the collective bargaining rights from teachers and state, county, and municipal workers. Speaking to union leaders, government officials, students, activists, media hosts and more, Nichols chronicled the unprecedented revolt in remarkable detail. He also explains what it means for politics, protest, labor relations, and the media, not just in Wisconsin but nationally.
Following Nichols’ address, we will break out and discuss regional approaches to making a meaningful impact in the November election and strategizing about how best to involve more of our co-workers in these efforts. Special attention will be given to defeating Prop. 32, which will have a devastating impact on unions and the middle class. This Assembly will have an abbreviated business meeting to allow ample time for our special focus on politics and activism.
